SMPlayer (v0.6.1) is a front-end for Mplayer, built in Qt 4.4.0. It plays any video or audio files including DVD’s, VCD’s and audio CD’s

The most interesting feature of SMPlayer is that it saves the settings of the file it plays. It saves the exact position where the playback was stopped when closed. It also remembers other settings like subtitles, volume etc. So, when you re-open the file, the playback will resume from the point you stopped it, with the same settings.

Other Features:

It supports over 20 languages which can be set in the preferences dialog. (preferences dialog can be opened from the options drop down menu).

SMPlayer has a highly customizable keyboard shortcut layout with shortcuts for almost anything. Scrolling mouse wheel seeks the video. (This seeking time can also be adjusted.)

It features a playlist which can be integrated into the interface or can be popped out.

SMPlayer also provides an OSD which can be set to Seekbar/Time/Time + Total time. Its’ function is exactly the same its name suggests.

The audio track and subtitles can be selected for a file. The font of the subtitles can be selected. Audio and subtitles can also be adjusted to remove delay. Subtitles can be searched from opensubtitles.org directly.

It also provides various audio and video filters. The aspect ratio can also be changed. It also provides a video equalizer, in which contrast, brightness, hue etc. can be set.

Note: SMPlayer does not select the CD or DVD drive by default which have to be set in the preferences dialog.

Although SMPlayer is a Qt based player it integrates into the GNOME Desktop Environment very well. It is available in the ubuntu software channel and can be installed with:

sudo apt-get install smplayer

In most of the GNU/Linux distributions, the bash prompt usually displays username, hsotname and the current working directory. The information that is to be displayed in the bash promt is stored in an environmental variable, PS1. Information that is to be displayed can be added or removed by modifying the PS1 variable. Colorization of the bash prompt can also be done by modifying the PS1 variable.

To know what your current prompt displays, enter the following command in your terminal:

echo $PS1

Output would be something like this:

\u@\h:\w\$

Here the backslash-escaped character sequences \u, \h,\w stand for username, hostname, current working directory respectively and \$ displays the symbol ‘#’ when the user is root and the symbol ‘$’ for other users. So what the above variable actually displays is ‘username@hostname:current working directory$‘.

Customize the information displayed

Let us start with a simple prompt. Enter the following command in your terminal:

e

xport PS1="I say:"

You will observe that your bash promt has changed to:

I say:

However, you’ll also observe that information like the current working directory or hostname are no longer displayed. This is because we did not include any backslash-escaped character sequences in our PS1 variable.

Now let us set the prompt so that it displays time, hostname and current working diectory. Enter:

export PS1="\t|\h:\w>
“

Your prompt changes to something like:

19:27:23|MyMachine:~>

The information displayed by \t,\h,\w is explained in the list of backslash-escaped character sequences

\a an ASCII bell character (07)
\d the date in "Weekday Month Date" format
                     (e.g., "Tue May 26")
\e an ASCII escape character (033)
\h the hostname up to the first `.'
              \H the hostname
\j the number of jobs currently managed by the
                     shell
\l the basename of the shell's terminal device
                     name
              \n newline
              \r carriage return
\s the name of the shell, the basename of $0
(the portion following the final slash)
\t the current time in 24-hour HH:MM:SS format
\T the current time in 12-hour HH:MM:SS format
\@ the current time in 12-hour am/pm format
\u the username of the current user
              \v the version of bash (e.g., 2.00)
\V the release of bash, version + patchlevel
                     (e.g., 2.00.0)
              \w the current working directory
\W the basename of the current working direc
                     tory
\! the history number of this command
\# the command number of this command
              \$ if the effective UID is 0, a #, otherwise a
                     $
\nnn the character corresponding to the octal
                     number nnn
              \\ a backslash
              \[ begin a sequence of non-printing characters,
which could be used to embed a terminal con
                     trol sequence into the prompt
              \] end a sequence of non-printing characters

Add color to the bash prompt

Colors can be added to the bash prompt by wrapping the information and symbols to be displayed in the bash promt with the backslash-escaped character sequences \e[x;ym and \e[m. Where x,y represent the color code from below

Black 0;30 Dark Gray 1;30
Blue 0;34 Light Blue 1;34
Green 0;32 Light Green 1;32
Cyan 0;36 Light Cyan 1;36
Red 0;31 Light Red 1;31
Purple 0;35 Light Purple 1;35
Brown 0;33 Yellow 1;33
Light Gray 0;37 White 1;37

Now let us set the color of our bash prompt from above to red color. Enter:

export PS1="\e[0;31m\t|\h:\w>\e[m"

Your prompt will look something like this:

19:47:01|MyMachine:~>

Let us leave the time red, and make hostname blue and current working directory green

export PS1="\e[0;31m\t|\e[0;34m\h:\e[0;32m\w>\e[m
"

Your prompt will now look something like this:

19:47:01|MyMachine:~>

Saving your PS1 variable

The bash prompt you have customized will be reset to its original value once the session is closed. To save the value of the PS1 variable export PS1="\e[0;31m\t|\e[0;34m\h:\e[0;32m\w>\e[m" . To do this enter the following command in your terminal:

echo "export PS1='$PS1'">>.bashrc

The variable $PS2, $PS3, $PS4 can also be customized similarly. Further features of the bash prompt can be found here.
